Spanish Lib Guide - task 8

The new lib guide is very helpful and will be a help me to give good customer service to our patrons. It will certainly be used by Spanish speakers but I can see where it could also be used by English speakers who want to practice reading Spanish. The page for children even has games where kids could play games in Spanish. They would get instructions on how to play in Spanish and that can help in language learning.

I like the translation you can do on Google if you need to. It is easy and works great! Don't be afraid to use the lib guide if you don't speak Spanish. After Jennifer's tour I had no trouble navigating the site. My Spanish consists of "Where is the bathroom?"

Remember that you can always log into your account on the catalog page!

Extra credit on task 6 - A Google a Day

I am happy that you put this in because I can always use practice on my searching!

I thought it was fun and I am going to make it a habit to do this at least once a week so I am faster and more efficient in my searching for helping patrons.

I did get the correct answer which is snowfall (Aug 17 question). I did have to use some of the hints for getting rainfall but that's what they are there for right?!

I would like my extra credit to go towards the $100.00 certificate.

Task 6 Helping patrons

Working backwards in Webolution. I guess that is ok and it's working for me!

Most of the answers were obvious to me however I did miss the homework help question. The third choice was the better one and I chose #4 - helping request books and use Masterfile. I was thinking of the Biography section that I know is there.

It is important to remind us that patrons need help in finding the data bases and how they can access them from home if they have internet access. Many of them don't want to take the time to sit down in the library and do their research - they want to do it at home and on their own time. Many times they are in a hurry and don't want to sit down right at that moment.

Question: A patron is filling out on line job applications and does not have an email address. They want to know their options, where to go and how to do it and why they can't have it emailed to the library.

a. You tell them to go to Google or Yahoo and set up an account.

b. You explain that the library does not have a general email account and tell them they have to set up their own account.

c. You help the patron by guiding them on the computer to Google, Yahoo or their preference and help them set up an account. Remind them to make note of any passwords so they can access the account when they need it.

d. You set up their account for them.

Webolution 2011 tasks 1 & 2

Hello again! After 6 mos I am back to post my learning experiences for library Webolution. I already have this blog so I finished task #1 just like that! Task 2 was a good scavenger hunt because there are SO many things on the website that are helpful to staff and patrons. It's good to make us scavenger once in awhile so we know what is going on and we see all the new things there are to offer. It would be nice if you did a scavenger hunt often so I stay current.

The thing I had to search for the longest was how long we have had the Polk directory. Things I didn't know that I learned - we have four mobile resources, we have a place to go to troubleshoot errors on downloads, and how many shopping bags you can bring with you to the library. The thing I use the most from the list of questions was #6. I use KDL on a daily basis for books in a series. I am very glad we have that resource.

I think when it comes to readers I will want a Nook with color so I will be gunning for the $100.00 cert. There are many things that the $$$ can be used for such as yarn, bike parts, beads for creating.................
